M Sand Vs CRF (crushed rock fines)

Everyone knows that River sand (RS) and crushed rock fines (CRF) have been used as an aggregate for concrete for centuries. Now the River sand (RS) has been banned in many places due to its adverse effect on the river and environment.

The Crushed rock fines (CRF) has a major problem in its angular shape and containing excessive fines. So, this was not good for constructions as it weekends the structure of the building and develops more cracks on the concrete wall in a short period of time. So, people hated using it for their buildings after that Crushed rock fines (CRF) have been modified to resolve this problem, and the technology of processing the Crushed rock fines (CRF) to reduce the fines and improve the particle shape has been developed the modified or processed crushed rock fines (CRF) are known as M Sand.

Now many constructors started using the M Sand which stronger than River Sand (RS). But as Crushed rock fines (CRF) and M Sand look like same in colour some people sell the Crushed rock fines (CRF) as M Sand in market so be aware while purchasing the M Sand.

How to identify the difference between M Sand and crushed rock fines (CRF)

If you find your M Sand contain lot of Dust particles than you should check the lab report of that particular M Sand because lot of Dust particles are found in Crushed rock fines (CRF).

Crushed rock fines (CRF) look like Talcum powder which is very nice and soft.

There are certain standards for preparing M Sand. M Sand are manufactured in Three different forms.

  1. M Sand for Concrete – Grading zone – II and IS 383
  2. M Sand for Block work – IS 2116
  3. M Sand for Plastering (P Sand) – IS 1542

There few simple steps to identify the Quality of M Sand with the best quality M sand you always get the best results.

River Sand (RS) Vs M Sand

How River Sand are Formed

Over Many Centuries mankind used river sand for constructions. Rivers are Naturally origin in Mountains and Ends in Ocean or Sea. When the water runs down from the mountain it just grains the Mountain and takes some stones with it and as the days runs these stones are rolled in the flow of water and converted into sands. This sand is deposited in the Through the river. In some Depth areas of River, this sand is found more. But it takes Many years for Nature to make the sand.

We have used it for constructions over many years as the civilization of mankind grow many constructions have been started and more amount of the sand is taken from the river. This activity makes the river go deeper in some area where more amount of sands is taken it also causes an imbalance in the River.

So, in order to save this Many Government prohibited to take sands from the river. So many Construction companies now started using the M Sand.

How M Sand are Manufactured

The full form of M Sand is Manufactured Sand. M Sand is made by crushing the stones and making it for Construction. There are a lot of processes takes place in the Manufacture of M Sand.

But buying a Best quality M Sand is very important and you can check the quality of M Sand by simple test.

Please Avoid using Crushed rock fines (CRF) as it is not good for Construction. More over Crushed rock fines and M Sand look similar in colour but M Sand is Modified or Processed stage of Crushed rock fines (CRF).

Can M Sand Used for Plastering a Wall?

Many of our Constructions have this doubt whether M Sand can be used for Plastering a Wall.

I would like to start with a real time example which happened back in 2013. It was a terrible time where sands where not available and I was in a tender which I have to finish in a week. We used m sand for construction and it was totally good. With no choice left i used M Sand for Plastering and it was terrible the finish looked like texture finish. We tried in different combination by adding less water etc but the result was the same.

After that in 2015 I found a Real estate constructor using the M Sand for the wall plastering I said it will not work as it was a house to my surprise the sand was so soft and it gave an excellent finish now, I asked how. He said it’s a P Sand.

Now the Thing you should know is there are Three Variant available in M Sand.

  1. M Sand for Concrete
  2. P Sand
  3. M Sand for RCC & Brick and Block

Now as the Name Suggest P Sand (Plastering M Sand) can be used for Plastering and you get Good Result in cost wise P Sand is Little bit higher than M Sand for Concrete. But Don’t use Concrete M Sand for Plastering. While you buy a M Sand please Check it quality. If you want to know how to Check M Sand quality check our previous blog. • Take a Sand and Just rub it in your hand if your hand stained it indicates the earth materials which is not good for a mixture.

River sands are formed naturally so it contains many Organic Impurities like coal, bones, shells, mica, and silt and these can be detrimental to the durability of steel and concrete, whereas manufactured sand has no silt or organic impurities.

Whereas M Sand this impurity are filtered and Manufactured only for constructions. So M Sand is more Stronger than River sand.

Disadvantages of M Sand – It requires more Cement and Water for Constructions when M sand is Used.

Why Manufactured Sand (M Sand) is favored for a strong structure?

The basic unit required for construction is sand. In older days, natural sand was used for construction purposes and they were extracted from river beds. Because of the higher presence of slit & clay and the requirement of cement is more in river sand. And that’s how manufacturers started looking for an alternative. So they started producing sand from hard granites by crushing which led to the birth of  M Sand or Manufactured Sand. They have more durability and quality is also assured.

 What  is M Sand?

M Sand or Manufactured Sand is extracted from granites. The size of M Sand is always less than 4.75 mm. Transportation cost of  M Sand is lesser and you can manufacture it near to your construction sites. They are also easily available because they are crushed from granites.

The Manufacturing / Making Process of M Sand

  • Crushing: Hard granite stones are crushed in Vertical Shaft Impact crusher where cubical and angular fine aggregate particles are manufactured for M Sand in Bangalore.
  • Screening: The screening process of M Sand in Mysore assists in thoroughly grading of the material to make it similar to river sand.
  • Washing: Washing removes all micro-fine particles. This M Sand is vastly different from that of crusher dust. Additionally, in the washing process, both fine aggregates for concrete and plaster Sand can be generated.

Advantages Of  M Sand

  • Eco-friendly material.
  • Higher durability and strength to concrete by mastering the lacks of segregation, bleeding, honeycombing, voids and capillary.
  • Well-graded aggregates are available in required proportions.
  • Cohesion and compressive strength are greater.
  • Concrete/ mortar quality is more beneficial.
  • The chances of slumping are lower.
  • Water retentivity is better.
  • M sand in Bangalore has lesser impurities and it is free from dust because it is manufactured.
  • Lesser Permeability for M Sand in Mysore.
  • Excellent in the strength of Concrete.
  • No Over-sized particles in M sand in Mysore.
  • They can also withstand the worst environmental conditions.
  • They prevent the corrosion of reinforcement steel by reducing moisture ingress,freeze-thaw effect.
  • Construction Defects are less for M Sand in Bangalore.

Quality Tests for M Sand

  • Adulteration test – Less adulteration.
  • Workability test – Higher workable concrete with less water content.
  • Rebound test –Concrete strength is excellent.
  • Slump cone test –  Strength of fresh concrete is higher and the chances of slumping are lesser.
